Press your finger on the screen to inflate a puffer fish with bouncing urchins. To blow up as many pufferfish and fill the gauge to 100% to clear a level. Don’t let the urchins pop the pufferfish, but you’ll lose a life. When you’ll lose all three lives or the timer hits zero, it’s Game Over.

Nice playthrough. One of my favorites even though it frustrates me to no end sometimes. There are two things that really bother me with this game and they are sort of coupled. The first thing that annoys me is the speed at which the enemies move through the sectors when their numbers diminish. The second thing that annoys me is how *long* it takes sometimes to engage the enemy when you're in the same sector. I've never found a reliable way to get the ships to appear quickly and the sector movement speed after I pick off the first few means that often times I may only get 1 or 2 shots at them before they move on. I've never saved the star base. I've never seen or heard of anyone who has. I suspect the only way is to make sure the enemies and the base are at opposite corners of the map and then do one's best to use the shields and target computer as little as possible to conserve energy as you move through the map. I've found also that the toggles for both on the keypad aren't instant - in the emulator I've been playing in, it seems to be much faster to use the difficulty switches to do the toggling. Even on this level, it's still far too likely that an enemy ship instantly appears in a place where you can't shoot it, it immediately shoots at you, and there's no way to shoot the incoming shot. I think that from a design perspective, maybe getting hit should have resulted in a bigger energy loss or greater chance of damage instead of outright obliteration because there's too many times where there's just nothing you can do and without shields, you're dead. Maybe there's some sort of strategy I never figured out, I dunno. Also, for me, the Ace rank is really hard to get on this level. As far as I can tell, with one star base visit you have to finish with 300+ energy units to get Ace 5. Based on the formula given in the manual, I think you need a final score of at least 2.5 to get Ace 5. I started a Google sheet a while back to try to figure out what score ranges went with what ranks/classes.

Why Volume is Low?

This is caused by a bug in Jelly Monsters. The cartridge doesn't initialize a certain RAM location and assumes a non-zero value will be stored there. If your VIC-20 happens to power up with a zero in that RAM location, then it'll bug out like this. It'll vary from machine to machine.

Awesome. So many videos of this game, so few (yours really is the only one I've found) that actually have someone who knows how to play. Love and hate this game. Amazing concept and presentation, but damn, those Krylons advance on your Starbase just a little too quickly. Even on the easiest difficulty I don't think I've ever wiped out the fleet before they destroyed the Starbase. Sometimes I wonder if that's not the point. You're fighting a losing battle, so get those repairs/refuels while you can and then make those bastards pay for what they did!!!

Well done! I was able to beat this game in 2 minutes and 29 seconds.

This game was so freaking dope. I didn't understand it because I was 3 or 4 when I started playing it, but I enjoyed it, and it was my favorite game on Atari 2600.

This was the game that replaced Atari 2600's 'Starship.' It has a more faster response timing. The graphics are what's different.
